Ahnapee Becomes Algoma (1897)
September 7
After decades as Wolf River, Ahnepee, and Ahnapee, the city on the lakeshore officially became Algoma on September 7, 1897. Spared by rain from the great fire of 1871, Algoma went on to become one of Lake Michigan’s charter fishing capitals and home to Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery.
