Captain Bailey Finds Shelter At Baileys Harbor (1848)

Caught in a Lake Michigan storm in 1848, Captain Justice Bailey steered his ship into an unknown harbor on the peninsula’s east shore. He found deep water and timber worth cutting, and within two years thousands of cords of wood were shipping out of the harbor that took his name.
