Iron ore discoveries on the Gogebic Range set off a boom in 1885, and Hurley sprang up almost overnight on the Wisconsin side of the Montreal River. At its rowdy peak the town packed dozens of saloons into a few blocks, earning a reputation as the wildest spot in the Northwoods.
