Icelanders Arrive On Washington Island (1870)

Four young men from Eyrarbakki, Iceland sailed for America on May 12, 1870 and reached Wisconsin that June, settling on Washington Island. Their leap of faith began one of the oldest Icelandic communities in North America, a heritage the island celebrates to this day.
