Jean Nicolet Lands At Red Banks (1634)

French explorer Jean Nicolet stepped ashore at Red Banks just northeast of Green Bay in the summer of 1634, becoming the first documented European to reach Wisconsin. Expecting to find China, he greeted the Ho-Chunk in a flowered Chinese robe while firing two pistols. The exact day went unrecorded, but Wisconsin history starts here.
