Yukhika-latuhse “She Tells Us Stories”
Wisconsin’s Indigenous Peoples Voice in Arts and Culture
The Yukhika-latuhse (She Tells Us Stories) is a literary journal published by Oneida Nation Arts Program (ONAP) in Oneida, Wisconsin. The first issue of Yukhika (pronounced you-key-gah) appeared in 2005.
Their purpose is to present the Native American literary voice. In the Yukhika, there is a mix of established and emerging Native American writers. Yukhika is published annually in late August. Manuscripts are accepted beginning May 1st.
Stories are meant to be shared, and our hope is that we will continue to produce a journal worthy of both the talented voices we’ll publish and the skilled audience who’ll consume our efforts. After all, nothing compares to the gratitude one feels after sharing or receiving a well told story.
They are interested in work that compels writers to put their words into print. Their magazine is for Native American writers to publish their poetry, prose, and essays. However, they will also accept opinion essays from Native writers that explore: the arts, political issues, remembrances, culture, history, media critiques, and various other matters in future issues.
In addition to supporting creative and prose writing, we find there a lack of art critique and discussion about Native American arts in Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region. Native arts in our region are lacking sound art critique and celebration relative to the popularity of Southwestern Native American art.
Mainstream media doesn’t often look into or report on issues, events, or culture of ethnic minorities in depth. Our Native Writers workshops, publication, and focused work on art critique will enable and encourage or own people to begin exploring, writing, and reflecting what is important and valuable in Native American communities.
Writers from all Indian reservations and communities in Wisconsin are welcome and encouraged to join our Native Writers workshops and submit work for publication in our journal. Their writing instructor, Ryan Winn, presents the Native Writers workshop in many tribal communities.
